How Big Is Too Big? HTC Release Titan Sized Windows Smartphone

by admin on September 20, 2011

Well, things still keep getting bigger and bigger in the mobile phone world. Not to be outdone by the seemingly standard upgrade of mobile phones to around the 4.3 inch screen mark, HTC have announced that it’s new flagship Windows Titan phone will feature a whopping 4.7 inch touchscreen making this equally one of the largest screen mobile phones out there. You won’t get much larger than this in the future, and this is even pushing the size of some of the smaller tablet devices (which start at 7 inches):

However, whilst in the past such HTC phones were much thicker, the new Titan features a new slimline design which has allowed the manufacturers the ability to increase the phone’s size without increasing too much of the weight, giving the hand-feel a remarkable similarity. But that’s not all – here’s the selling points of the phone:

4.7 Inch Screen: Yeah, we know we said it before, but it’s worth saying again. Featuring the new ‘Super LCD’ technology, the phone really does live up to it’s name. Featuring a QVGA resolution of 480 x 800 – admittedly this isn’t the highest with phones with smaller screens offering equivalent or better (notable Apple iPhone 4) but the size of the screen makes watching movies very comfortable.

1.5Ghz processor: HTC have decided against dual-core technology for the handset – perhaps a limitation of the Windows OS infrastructure. Nevertheless, the phone is as powerful as you can get and should take care of every task that you throw at it – particularly handy for the future.

Windows Mango: The phone will be equipped with the latest Mango update straight from the box, with no upgrading required. The new features such as multitasking and widgets. Although skinning of the OS isn’t as free as it was under Android, HTC have still included some of their own branded apps such as the famous weather and time applications.

8 Megapixel Camera: We’re happy that the camera is powerful and at 8 megapixels with dual flash, this is a very sensible choice to produce good quality images. There is also a high-resolution 1.3M front-facing camera as well which should allow for very decent video calling.

Audio Quality: The phone is bundled with SRS surround sound which should prove to be quite an interesting concept; with just one speaker on the back of the phone it remains unclear whether this can be replicated using just this or perhaps in conjunction with additional equipment.

No MicroSD: As usual, there is no external memory card slot, but there is a large 16GB flash memory space as well as 512MB RAM. It’s probably not escaped the fact that the handset is at best only equivalent to many of the top-end Android handsets with some surpassing this, but with different requirements, comparisons are not exactly fair.

Price and Release: This is already well on the way and pencilled in for a release date of October 15, 2011. The price is also set at £489.99 which puts it right at the top end of the market – but you can console yourself with the fact that this will probably be the best Windows-based smartphone of 2011.
