It’s probably testament to the phones that the design of the newer Blackberry 9780, Blackberry 9900 or Blackberry 9700, all variants of the Bold series have not changed materially with the design, with the newer Blackberry Bold 9900 being very reminiscent of this original design. The main improvements of the series being in the software and also the technical specs. But let’s not forget, this still remains a very serviceable phone and had some top specs for the time of release as we can see here:
Solid Construction: The Bold is made from high quality materials, from carbon fibre covers to the leather-clad battery cover with a more solid keyboard, which compares to the plastic materials of the cheaper Curve series, for example, the Blackberry 8520. This gives the 9000 a weight of 136g, which is surprisingly heavy for the dimensions of the phone.
Non-touch: Touch had not reached the Bold by this time, and the 2.4″ screen displays a resolution of 480 x 320 which is still a very good display by today’s standards. In light of the non-touchscreen a trackball is included to easily navigate the menu, which takes some getting used to but is acceptable for this size of screen.
2.0MP Camera: There is no front-facing camera, and the rear is only 2.0 megapixels with flash. However, the media functions were never the strong point on phones such as this, even though the phone takes a surprising range of media functions and also provides a good microSD card slot.
Business Features: Here is the jewel in the crown for the phone. The phone has Wi-FI, 3G, GPRS, and also support for the important Blackberry Mail and Messenger functions. Although the OS has now largely been superceded by the newer BB OS6 and OS7, a large community of support remains for the older models and the phone is still sufficiently powerful enough to run current apps on the market.
Price: Undoubtedly this will be a high-value, mid-range business phone before long with the weight of the other Bolds creating a downward price pressure upon this. If you’re not needing any multimedia functions and want a reliable business phone for emailing and keeping contacts with others, you really can’t go wrong. With the Blackberry Bold 9900 much higher specced than this, we wouldn’t be surprised at all to see this phone priced at around £200 SIM-Free by the end of the year as retailers look to clear these out.
