LG Optimus 3D P920 3D SIM-Free Phone – LG Strikes First Again

by admin on July 13, 2011

LG have been really pushing the boat out in recent times and one of their main advantages is the first mover advantage. Disallowing other minor makes of phone, among the elite brands of manufacturer they’ve been quick out of the blocks for handset specifications such as dual-core (LG Optimus 2X) and Windows 7 (LG Optimus 7). In keeping with this record, and the Optimus family name, the 3D is one of the first handsets to reach the market which has true 3D capability without glasses. There are plenty of competitors lined up for this beauty and we’re sure everyone will be watching with bated breath to see how this turns out, and whether 3D is a gimmick the public will be willing to pay for. On the face of it, the handset looks standard:

The phone looks very much in line with the current Optimus series and there is little to the naked eye to suggest the phone is 3D, which is where the beauty lies. Rather sensibly, Android is the OS of choice for this system, although we’d be surprised if a Windows variant did not follow. Here’s what the phone features:

3D Mode - The phone runs in 2D mode for most of the time, as most applications and content are not optimised for 3D. The 3D mode is activated by a button on the phone which turns on the display. There are some inbuilt apps which showcase the ability but rather interestingly YouTube have a new 3D channel, which shows the future is good.

4.3 Inch Display – Mammoth display, which of course is 3D capable and it seems pointless to use anything smaller. The technology is still early though and other factors have taken a hit – colours aren’t as bright or vivid as AMOLED, and the 800 x 480 pixel resolution will not feature as high a dpi as many new handsets.

Dual 5 Megapixel Camera – Two cameras on the back allow simultaneous images to be captured for a true 3D image. This is rather new for the handset and very innovative. Picture quality is harder to assess with little comparability at the moment. The camera can also be used as a standalone item which records 1080p video in 2D or 720p in 3D.

Fully Multimedia Ready - As you can guess, it’s well catered for media wise, with microSDHC adding to the 16GB already on board. The dual-core 1GHz processor makes sure that things are running just fine, especially high-resolution video.

Price – It’s clear that 3D is the main selling point behind the handset and the price is interesting enough. Forgetting the 3D for a while, this is a top-end phone, although perhaps not as good as the Samsung Galaxy S 2 in terms of pure specs, but the 3D is the differentiator here. At a price of £470 SIM-Free, in our opinion this represents something like a £70-100 premium for the addition of the 3D capability, so decide for yourself how much you’ll need/want it before purchase.
